COVID-19 and impact on RTOs, staff and students

The Training Accreditation Council acknowledges the widespread concern regarding COVID-19 and the challenges this health issue poses for RTOs, staff and students.

The Council is aware that some RTOs delivering qualifications with mandated work placements such as in the aged care and child care sectors have been informed that employers are unable to accommodate student placements for the foreseeable future. For RTOs this may cause challenges as workplaces attempt to restrict the impact of COVID-19 on their workplaces and their clients. The Council acknowledges the significant impact this may have for students to meet course requirements and completion of their studies.

To ensure students are not disadvantaged, RTOs may need to consider alternative arrangements to meet workplace requirements mandated within specific qualifications. All instances of flexible arrangements should be documented particularly where compliance with the Standards for RTOs may be at risk.

In addition, the Council encourages RTOs to consider flexible arrangements for their students who have been directly impacted by travel restrictions or isolation periods.  Flexible arrangements could include flexible course delivery, such as through online delivery of courses for students who are prevented from attending classes.

As the impacts of COVID-19 may take many forms for different RTOs, where a provider is impacted and are investigating alternative arrangements for their students, the Council recommends they contact the TAC Secretariat on (08) 9224 6510 to discuss the proposed arrangements. The Secretariat will work with RTOs on a case by case basis.

RTOs should refer to official sources for up to date information on COVID-19 including:

  • The Western Australian Government’s COVID-19 Health Information Line on 1800 020 080 for advice and more information, including specific clinic locations by visiting www.healthywa.wa.gov.au.
  • The Australian Government’s Department of Health has published general information and fact sheets for the education sector about the Coronavirus on their website.
